We’re excited to bring you an all-poetry issue of Cutleaf this week. In this issue, Jacob Boyd challenges John Perry Barlow’s 25 Principles of Adult Behavior, beginning with the poem “Remember that Your Life Belongs to Others as Well. Do Not Endanger It Frivolously.” Christen Noel Kaufman learns to hold death in her hands in “Never Close a Knife Someone Else Has Opened.” And Okwudili Nebeolisa sinks into the kind of loneliness that can only be felt on dark nights in “It’s Never a Ghost.”

This issue features portraits, courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, representing a character from one of nine Peking opera plays.

In honor of Short Story Month, we present an all-fiction issue of Cutleaf. Matt Barrett brings together two unlikely neighbors, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a quiet neighborhood where so much happens in “The Bright Green Door.” L. Mari Harris explores dark, strange, and heartbreaking moments in three flash fictions beginning with “In the House with the People.” And Amy Weldon shares a historical fiction of a young woman shunned by those who she thinks should help in “Malconformation.”

This issue features images by architectural critic and photographer John Margolies (1940–2016.)

In this issue, Angie, an aspiring artist, meets Paul, an older man whose entire life is an unconventional artistic experience in Meghan Louise Wagner’s “Wild Sage.” Lauren Harkawik imagines a life that can be towed on a truck in “House on Wheels.” And Catherine Pritchard Childress gives voice to memorable women from the Bible in four poems beginning with “Wife to Wife.” These poems are excerpted from Childress’s full-length collection Outside the Frame, published this week by EastOver Press.

In honor of National Poetry Month, we’re thrilled to share an all-poetry issue of Cutleaf with work selected by guest editor Darius Stewart.
In this issue, Darius Atefat-Peckham reveals the struggle some endure learning to become ghosts before they learn to die in five poems beginning with “The Patient Stone.” Hannah Bonner explores unrequited, complicated love as a single woman in five poems beginning with “The Prize.” And Naomi Shihab Nye lingers in the many moments where light is found after loss in six poems beginning with “All the Details Followed by Silence.”

This issue features stills from Drunken Angel, a 1948 film directed by Akira Kurosawa.

In this issue, Ace Boggess jokes around with his god while asking philosophical and religious questions in three poems beginning with “Notes for my Autobiographer.” A mother nearing her wits end hikes through the swamp and meets up with a stranger who she wants to impress in Amber Wheeler Bacon’s story “Another Time Could Be Different.” And William Vandegrift answers a doctor’s questions the best he can in his essay “The Black Dog.”

This issue features images from one of the first series of X-rays ever produced, by Josef Maria Eder (1855–1944 and Eduard Valenta (1857–1937), both from Austria.

In this issue, a young woman negotiates her boyfriend’s roommate’s behavior, and befriends the roommate’s goat, in Sara Streeter’s”The House Always Wins.” Joanne Proulx confronts a memory that should stay in the past in “The Zoo.” And Rannvá Holm Mortensen both laments and celebrates that “everything is salt” in four sections from her book length poem Sólsmakkur (Suntaste), translated from the Faroese by Matthew Landrum.

This issue features illustrations of varieties of pigeons by Anton Schoner from Illustriertes Prachtwerk sämtlicher Taubenrassen (1906).

In this issue, Craig Holt barely survives, and may have learned his lesson, in “Drinking the Ocean: Notes on Travel and Drowning.” A young man negotiates family expectations and his relationship with a widow in Maya Kanwal’s “A Shade for the Window.” And Carolyn Oliver says “In another life, I am…” in four poems that expand on the possibilities of what we all are or might be, beginning with the poem “Deep Learning.”
