In honor of Short Story Month, we are thrilled to share an all-fiction issue of Cutleaf.
In this issue, Matt Barrett brings together two unlikely neighbors, a Yorkshire Terrier, and a quiet neighborhood where so much happens in “The Bright Green Door,” a strange and surrealist tale about space, time, and relationships.
L. Mari Harris explores a range of complex, dark, strange, and heartbreaking moments in three masterfully crafted flash fictions begining with “In the House with the People.”
And Amy Weldon shares a historical fiction of a young person dealing with an abnormal growth and being shunned by those who she thinks should help in “Malconformation.”
This issue features images by architectural critic and photographer John Margolies (1940–2016), who documented, for nearly forty years, the most remarkable examples he encountered of buildings and signs built by locals on the American roadside. He published some of his discoveries in books and consigned the rest to an archive, which has now been purchased by the Library of Congress.

The architectural critic and photographer John Margolies (1940–2016) saw there could be home-made beauty in the buildings and signs locals built on the American roadside. For almost forty years, he documented the most remarkable examples he found, publishing some of his discoveries in books and consigning the rest to an archive, which has now been purchased by the Library of Congress who, in a wonderfully gracious move, have lifted all copyright restrictions on the photographs.
